I transferred a domain out from a registrar once (after a purchase at auction… it was a registrar that specialised in aftermarket domains), and they immediately approved it without even emailing me. It was absolutely terrifying. That registrar doesn’t exist any more.
I don’t like forced delays though… I wish they always provided a mechanism to expedite the transfer. I use two-factor auth for my email, and also for my domain accounts (where the provider supports it), so for an attacker to approve it they’d need my password and my 2fac code to get into the account.
I usually check with tld-list.com when an deal comes to my attention or when domains need renewal. What surprises me that Ionos/1and1 is used so little, because they sometimes have crazy prices, and their website & service has improved a lot! (1and1 used to be very difficult and unclear in DNS management years ago…)
I just used the Namecheap deal to transfer a .com and .net in, and this has been my practice for years: fall for a cheap domain name, and then keep finding the next lowest price (usually transfer is cheaper than renewal).
Using the usual suspects: Porkbun, Ionos, Namecheap, LCN, Netim, Namesilo; in the past: Gandi, Domainsite, Name, Godaddy, Mydomain, Dollar2host, Powerpipe (my first paid-for registrar…!)
Porkbun is awesome. Didn’t see Uniregistry but they’re also very good. Never had an issue with either of them. In the past internet.bs has been terrible, I’d avoid them
I have one domain with them (.wf), haven’t had any issues but then I bought the domain, pointed the DNS to Cloudflare and haven’t been back to I.BS except to renew … (oooooo irritable bowel syndrome … what an unfortunate abbreviation)
